About 150 North Korean defectors in Canada are under imminent threat of deportation due to false statements in their asylum application forms, Al Jazeera reported Monday.
Among them is Kim, who came to Canada with his wife, daughter and son 11 years ago. He now he has two more children, both Canadian citizens.
"That notice means death to me," Kim told Al Jazeera. "I came all the way here for a better life and my family is well adjusted to life in Canada. To think we're going to be separated, it breaks my heart."
According to the report, he admitted his family lied in their asylum application ― saying they defected to China, not South Korea ― to help ease the immigration process.
The refugees reportedly claimed South Korea was unsafe because North Korean spies could track them down there.
